Each year, according to the wishes of the Gyalwang Karmapa, there is an Akshobhya ritual which culminates in a fire ritual held in front of Tergar shrine hall. This year, however, the Akshobhya Ritual has been held privately in the library at the back of the Monlam Pavillion Building. The participants were restricted to those who had completed the Akshobhya retreat, but they included a handful of laypeople who were qualified to join the monastics. There were more than forty participants, and the ritual was led by Adzin Rinpoche and Gyalpo Rinpoche.
They met together on the afternoon of the 21st January to recite the Akshobhya sadhana, and then again on the 22nd January, when they offered the full ritual with a jangchok—the fire ritual for those who have died. The ritual also included the names of others who are still living but facing various kinds of difficulty. All the names were written on paper and burnt at the conclusion of the ritual.
